Difficulties in translating “garsonieră confort doi”

During this last period of time I encountered some difficulties in translating certain words and expressions in A.B.’s book (I shall not use the entire name of the author).
Some of them were related with the translation of different names, plants, objects or connotation of places. I admit that I even encountered difficulties in translating the colloquial language - sometimes is harder than it seems!
These issues appear when your goal, as a translator, implies the obligation of rendering back into the target language exactly the same idea implied by the author...
To begin with, the aim of this "essay" is to explain and translate in English “garsonieră confort doi”. To continue with, I will quote the Romanian phrase in question: “Radul locuia într-o garsonieră confort doi, în Pantelimon.”
As we already know, for the Romanian word “garsonieră” we can both use “one room” or “studio flat”. The problem is the translation of “confort doi”, due to the fact that an English speaker would say only “studio flat”, with no additional information.
It is very important to mention that Romanians have three types of studio flats. The smallest studio flats are known as “garsoniere confort trei” (a comfort level three studio flats), then we have “garsoniere confort doi” (a comfort level two studio flats, like the studio flat mentioned in our text) and the last type is represented by the biggest studio flats, which are known as “garsoniere confort unu” (a comfort level one studio flats).
Moreover, in this situation we could also use the foot note in order to explain this cultural concept. From my point of view, I would rather explain “confort doi” within the text. This is also the reason why I think that the right solution is to translate and explain at a time “garsonieră confort doi”.
Coming back to the text, I believe that “a comfort level two studio flat” is the best translation in this case. At this juncture we can say that an English speaker can imagine and understand the same thing as a Romanian when reading “garsonieră confort doi”.
At least I hope so :D
